About me

Writer and poet Jackson

I love writing! I relish the art of writing well, whether it’s poetry, creative writing, or literary criticism, or something more down-to-earth, like resume writing, content writing, or promotional copywriting. I also get a lot of satisfaction from helping other people refine and publish their writing.

Facebook comment by Esther Ottaway: I love Jackson's writing.

As well as 4 well-received books, a long list of other publications, and an award-winning PhD in Writing, I have substantial training and experience in adult education and professional editing. I’ve been teaching writing, poetry, and related subjects for more than 15 years, and I’ve edited many theses, articles, books, and other documents.

I was born in Cumbria, England, and am now living in New Zealand after spending most of my life in Australia. My initial career was in IT, working as a software developer and systems administrator; I’m lucky to have the kind of brain that can think both scientifically and creatively. I have an Honours degree in Computer Science from the University of Western Australia.

I’ve also worked as an academic, an English language teacher, and a voluntary breastfeeding counsellor—but the most challenging job of my career was that of primary caregiver to my two children, now excellent adults I’m proud to call friends.

Although I live in Dunedin, New Zealand, I have my own transport and am happy to travel to meet clients, present workshops and appear at festivals. I’m also very comfortable working online.

My pronouns are they/them.

Jackson writing

I love to write, and I’ve been doing it since I could hold a pencil.

Writing has been part of most of my paid and voluntary roles: I have produced countless articles, reports, essays, reviews, promotional materials, and instruction manuals, and edited many newsletters. I have written for trade magazines, professional society bulletins, websites, and blogs.

In 2018, I completed a PhD in Writing at Edith Cowan University. As well as a book of poems, my thesis includes a story and a set of four critical essays on poetry and writing theory.

I have outstanding research skills, so I can write about any topic that will engage an audience. My thesis won the University Research Medal and two other awards.

I’m available to write for you—including content writing, copywriting, resume writing, and ghostwriting—as long as your business or activity is kind to people, animals, and the environment.

Editor Jackson

I’m a trained professional editor. Whatever your document, I can help you make it perfect. I have years of experience providing tactful feedback, manuscript assessments, poetry editing, fiction editing, non-fiction editing, and proofreading. My clients have gone on to publish books and win awards.

In 2022 and 2023, my main client was Capstone Editing, for whom I worked as a senior editor and trainer after consolidating my skills through their rigorous training course. Capstone (who are no longer taking work) specialised mainly in academic editing, including article and thesis editing, but my assignments also included corporate editing, resume editing, novel editing, and memoir editing.

Ask me about sensitivity reading to ensure your work uses up-to-date language that respects people of all genders.

I know it’s weird, but I love document formatting! I can transform your messy text into a professionally laid out document that will impress whoever looks at it.

Educator.

Writing teacher Jackson

I’m a trained adult educator and group facilitator. I have taught writing, poetry and related subjects for over 15 years, presenting countless online classes and in-person workshops and courses for community groups, libraries, colleges and individuals.

My initial education training came from the Australian Breastfeeding Association, with whom I volunteered as an educator, counsellor and group leader for 10 years. I taught the English language in China and Australia from 2018 to 2020 after taking a CELTA certificate in English language teaching, which consolidated my grammar knowledge and extended my teaching skills. In 2020 and 2021, I completed Edith Cowan University’s professional development in online education and taught media studies online.

I’m available on Zoom or in your meeting room for poetry feedback, poetry workshops, writing courses, private writing lessons, and creative writing mentoring.

Poet.

Poet Jackson on the microphone

I’ve written poetry since childhood, seeking poems that work whether declaimed loudly or whispered in the mind.

My poems are widely published in journals and anthologies and have won various awards and commendations, including nomination for Best of the Net.

I’ve published 4 full-length books—3 with publishers, 1 self-published—all favourably reviewed. I’ve been publishing creative commons poetry online since 2003.

My hundreds of public appearances have included features at the Queensland, Tasmanian and Western Australian Poetry Festivals. I’m known across Australia as a poetry advocate; I instigated Perth Poetry Club and online journal Uneven Floor.

I’m available online and in person for readings, author talks, poetry feedback, poetry workshops and lessons, competition judging, and writing poems on commission.
